'The heads of Chabad were hereditary honorary citizens of the Russian Empire and had good ties with the government’: Beersheba Chabad

Jews in tsarist Russia through the prism of life and teachings of HABAD leaders

10.08.2025
At the end of the 18th century, the territories of Lithuania, Belarus, Central and Western Ukraine, which until then belonged to Poland, are part of the Russian Empire. Millions of Jews become subjects of tsarist Russia.

Around the same time, the KHABAD movement is founded in Belarus. Within several decades, hundreds of thousands of Jews will belong to this movement, and the leaders of the HABAD will become the leading leaders of the Jews of the Russian Empire. The heads of HABAD were hereditary honorary citizens of the Russian Empire and had good ties with the government. Despite this, almost all leaders of HABAD were repeatedly arrested for an uncompromising struggle for the rights of the Jews of the Russian Empire.

Rav Sholem Lugov, director of the site moshiach.ru, published 5 books describing the biography and teachings of the first five chapters of the HABAD, the life and activities of which were directly related to such events as the war with Napoleon, the violent conscription of Jewish children into the tsarist army, Jewish pogroms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the case of Beilis, the struggle for the abolition of the settlement line and many other events.

Those wishing to order these books can contact the Itgalut Center in Beersheba by phone 0544529771.
