Seventh Canadian province adopts IHRA definition of anti-Semitism

May 12, 2023

The government of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has adopted a working definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). According to Arutz Sheva, the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta and New Brunswick previously adopted the IHRA definition.

The IHRA describes anti-Semitism as "a certain perception of Jews that can be expressed as hatred towards them". The wording includes examples of common anti-Semitic activities and attitudes. Among them are the denial of the Holocaust and the denial of Israel's right to exist, blaming Jews for Israel's policies, the use of negative stereotypes about Jews as a "shadow power" and so on.

Recall that on May 7, at the initiative of Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Diaspora Minister Amichai Shikli, the Israeli government adopted additional sections of the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism. They concern "distortion and denial of the Holocaust" and the definition of "discrimination against Roma/Gypsies".
