Russia State Duma wants to cancel old decree of USSR giving Crimea to Ukraine

The decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on the transfer of Crimea under the control of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR) must be canceled. State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin announced his desire to annul this decision, RIA Novosti reports .

According to him, Kyiv repeats “the same thing” when stating its claims to the Crimea and referring to the decision of the authorities of the Soviet Union.

“In 1954, Crimea was stolen from Russia by the decision of the party bodies in violation of all possible laws of the Soviet Union. We are the only successors of the Soviet Union, so we should return to this and defiantly cancel these decisions. This needs to be done,” the parliamentarian said.

Zatulin suggested that the abolition of the decision to transfer the Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR would finally close the question of the peninsula's belonging to the whole world.

The decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR chaired by Kliment Voroshilov on the exclusion of Crimea from the RSFSR was signed on February 19, 1954. After that, a corresponding law was adopted, and amendments were made to the Constitution of the USSR. After the collapse of the Union, Crimea became part of independent Ukraine and joined Russia in the spring of 2014 following a referendum.

The voting results do not recognize Kyiv, the United States and the EU countries, considering the peninsula an occupied territory. Moscow insists on respecting the norms of international law.
