Russia State Duma calls the birth of a child a 'ticket to poverty'

November 20, 2023

For most Russians, having a child is a ticket to poverty. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy Mikhail Delyagin on the radio station “Moscow Speaks”.

According to him, the absolute poverty of part of the country's population is one of the problems of demography. “For the vast majority of Russian citizens, a child is a one-way ticket to poverty, a second child is a one-way ticket to poverty,” Delyagin said.

The deputy also announced a catastrophe in the health sector. According to Delyagin, doctors told him that 30 percent of Russian women of childbearing age cannot give birth for medical reasons. “In the context of optimizing healthcare and turning it into a healthcare burial, naturally, this is of no interest to anyone, at least at the political level,” the parliamentarian believes.

In addition, demographics are affected by Russians’ lack of meaning in life, Delyagin added. According to him, the “wild bureaucracy” cannot offer the population anything “except the song of the Shaman.” The parliamentarian expressed the opinion that, with rare exceptions, Russians do not have the opportunity to be masters of their own destiny. “He [the Russian] is forced to go and ask with an outstretched hand. When a person turns on the TV and realizes that he has no future, in reality this is exactly the effect,” the deputy concluded.

Earlier, State Duma deputy Valery Seleznev proposed increasing the birth rate in Russia by releasing female prisoners from prisons in exchange for having children. The politician considers his idea more original than the “medieval prohibitions” of his colleagues. He emphasized that there are about 45 thousand women in Russian prisons, most of whom are serving minor economic charges.

In turn, State Duma deputy Sultan Khamzaev proposed paying money to Russian women who refuse an abortion, and after the birth of the child, taking him into the care of the state. This initiative outraged the politician's colleagues . Chairman of the lower house of parliament committee on family, women and children Nina Ostanina called the idea immoral. “Children are not puppies,” she said in an interview with Lenta.ru.
