Russia adopts law on criminal liability for denying genocide of Soviet people by Nazis or insulting memory of victims

The State Duma adopted a bill on criminal liability for denying and approving the genocide of the Soviet people, as well as for insulting the memory of its victims.
The State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a law on the introduction of criminal liability for "denial or approval of the genocide of the Soviet people by the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War and for insulting the memory of the victims of the genocide". The second and third, final readings took place on Tuesday, March 24. The first reading was held on February 26.
By the second reading, an amendment was also made to the bill, which provides for criminal liability for "destruction, damage or desecration of the graves of the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people" outside Russia.
Corresponding changes are proposed to be made to Articles 243.4 and 354.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. They provide for punishment in the form of a fine of 2 to 5 million rubles, forced labor for up to five years or imprisonment for the same period, as well as a fine of up to 3 million, forced labor or imprisonment for up to three years, respectively.
