Alexander Khinstein was elected governor of the Kursk region
Acting Governor of the Kursk Region from the United Russia party Alexander Khinstein won the election with 86.93% of the votes, according to the CEC data after processing 100% of the protocols. In total, more than 406 thousand people voted for Hinstein.
The second place was taken by the candidate from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Alexei Bobovnikov with 5.09% of the votes (23.8 thousand votes), the third - the candidate from the LDPR Alexei Tomanov with 4.07% (19 thousand). The fourth place was taken by the candidate of the party "Fair Russia - for Truth" Gennady Baev with 2.6% of the votes (12 thousand).
The turnout in the region as a result of three-day voting was about 50%.
Alexander Khinstein was nominated by United Russia. The former head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy has been the acting governor of the Kursk region since December 5, 2024. When he headed the region, a significant part of it was under the control of Ukrainian units.
The previous elections of the governor of the Kursk region were held in September 2024. Alexey Smirnov won them, gaining 65% of the votes.
In April, Smirnov was detained on suspicion of embezzlement of 1 billion rubles allocated by the Regional Development Corporation for the construction of fortifications on the border with Ukraine. In September, it became known that a criminal case was also opened against the ex-governor under Part 6 of Art. 290 of the Criminal Code (receiving a bribe in a particularly large amount).
