Vladimir Putin gave Russian citizenship to the American writer and former informal adviser to US President Ronald Reagan on the USSR, Suzanne Massy. The corresponding decree was signed by the Russian president on December 30.
Suzanne Massie is 90 years old. She is a researcher of Russian history and author of The Land of the Firebird: The Beauty of Ancient Russia. It is believed that Reagan became interested in Massie after reading her work. The President and the writer met at the White House. After that, she became Reagan's informal adviser on interaction with the Soviet Union.
Massy helped the American president prepare for meetings with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva and Reykjavik in the mid-1980s. It is believed that it was Massy who taught Reagan to speak Russian the phrase "trust but verify."
In May 2021, Massie asked Putin to grant her Russian citizenship. Then she said that she had devoted many years to the rapprochement of the two countries. Later, Massy noted that she needed a passport, among other things, to write a book in Russia.

Reagan had Massie carry a message to Moscow in 1984 — word that he would like to forge a new cultural agreement—and she brought messages back. The informal channel, one of many, drove Secretary of State George Shultz to distraction, but while Reagan and Gorbachev ultimately agreed to one set of informal channels—Dobrynin in Washington and Hartman in Moscow—Massie continued to carry messages from Moscow to Reagan and back again. She encouraged Reagan to give Gorbachev breathing room.

In 1991 she was appointed as the only lay member of the Permanent Episcopal-Orthodox Coordinating Committee, which has involved bi-annual discussions in Russia and the United States with hierarchs of the church, including Patriarch Aleksy II.
