February 13, 2022 Anno DominiGeopolitical interests in the first half of the 20th century encouraged Germany to use Muslim peoples against England. It was started by Kaiser Wilhelm II during the First World War. Then German and Turkish propaganda in the Middle East trumpeted that the Kaiser converted to Islam during his trip to Jerusalem in 1898.
Hitler: "Islam is the religion of men"
By the beginning of the Second World War, the beginning of the Zionist project was added to the motives of anti-British propaganda, sensitive to Muslims. Great Britain set out to promote the creation of an independent Jewish state on its mandated territory in Palestine (which it received in 1920). This state could only be created by ousting the Arabs from their lands. Thus, anti-English sentiments of the Arabs were supplemented by anti-Semitic notes (it would be wrong to call this “anti-Semitism”, since the Arabs are also Semites).
Rapprochement between the Nazis and Islamists also took place on the basis of militant anti-communism. Brief period of cooperation between Hitler and Stalin in 1939-41. didn't really change anything here. Islamist leaders were very impressed that Hitler called communism a "Jewish ideology." “Created and led by Jews, Bolshevism,” Islamic ideologue Mohammed Sabri, who worked in Goebbels’ department, wrote in unison with the Führer in 1941 in the propaganda brochure “Islam, Judaism, Bolshevism,” is an irreconcilable enemy of Islam.” In turn, the Nazis, with the help of the Islamists, wanted to eradicate the sympathy of the peoples of the East for Soviet Russia, which proclaimed anti-colonialism as part of its ideology.
Dominic Green, author of an article in the Wall Street Journal on January 16, 2015, referring to the book by historian David Motadel "Islam and Nazi Germany's War", writes that the modern European Union inherited some tenacious clichés from Hitler's propaganda. So, it was Hitler who became the first European politician who declared that "Islam is incapable of terrorism." Hitler also instructed the press of the Third Reich to exalt the "cultural factor of the Islamic world" and banned negative references to the religion of the Prophet Muhammad.
In private conversations, the Fuhrer spoke very positively about Islam, calling it, according to the testimony of the chief architect and Minister of Armaments of the Third Reich, Albert Speer, "the religion of real men", contrasting it in this capacity with "soft Christianity."
Muslim SS troops
Many volunteer units from Muslims fought as part of the Wehrmacht and the SS. Here it is necessary to name, first of all, the SS legion "Free Arabia", created from the Arabs of various countries of North Africa and Arab immigrants in Europe. By 1945, Free Arabia had about 20,000 fighters. Large formations were the Albanian (21st Mountain) SS Division "Skanderbeg" and the 1st Croatian (13th Mountain) SS Division "Khanjar". The latter was made up of Bosnian Muslims.
Large SS formations were created from Muslim prisoners of war of the peoples of the USSR: the Turkestan Legion, the Eastern Turkic Connection, the Idel-Ural Legion, the Azerbaijan Legion and other, smaller ones. Muslims of Indian origin were included in the SS legion "Free India" along with the Hindus, which was an obvious mistake of the Nazis: even the general hatred of the British could not extinguish the enmity between the two largest communities in India.
Jihad for the Third Reich
In 1936, the first "intifada" began in Palestine against the British mandate and the project of creating a Jewish state. Mufti of Jerusalem Muhammad Amin al-Husseini acted as its ideological inspirer and leader. Back in 1931, he chaired the World Islamic Conference, and then became chairman of the Supreme Arab Committee, which became the center of control of the uprising. Husseini met with a Swiss banker, François Genoux, who gave money to the Nazis before coming to power, and arranged for financial support. After the war, Genu continued to be sponsored by the Nazi diaspora and Arab terrorism.
In 1939, the British almost managed to cope with the unrest in Palestine, and then Husseini moved to Iraq. The outbreak of World War II inspired the Islamist underground. With the help of Husseini, the Nazis managed to bring a pro-German government to power in Iraq in early 1941. True, thanks to the decisive actions of the British military, a month later, in May 1941, this government was driven out.
Husseini moved to the Third Reich, where Hitler decided to use the moral authority of the Mufti of Jerusalem to mobilize Muslims. In Hitler's directive No. 32 of June 11, 1941, the incitement of the Arab national liberation revolution was indicated. The meeting of the Fuhrer and the Mufti took place in Berlin on November 28, 1941. Husseini helped create the Arab Legion, Albanian, Bosnian and other Muslim units of the SS. As Israeli historian Benny Morris writes, Hitler promised Husseini to expel the Jews from Palestine and ensure national self-determination for the Arabs of the Middle East after the war.
Husseini's speech on the Berlin radio on March 1, 1944 was most famous. The mufti called on all Muslims to holy jihad on the side of Nazi Germany against its enemies, and above all, to the wholesale murder of Jews, wherever possible.
After the war, the mufti managed, playing on the contradictions between the USSR and the West, who tried, each in their own favor, to play the Islamic card to avoid trial for participation in war crimes of Nazism. Marshal Tito, to whom Husseini was handed over (since the Muslim units of the SS committed atrocities mainly on the territory of Yugoslavia), did not prevent him from escaping to his “native Palestine”, where until 1974 Hitler’s friend continued from time to time to appeal to the practice of the Holocaust for the triumph of the “intifada”.
