Jewish chess player elected president of Hungary

20.07.2026

The parliamentary group of Hungary's ruling Tisa party unanimously supported Prime Minister Peter Madyar's proposal to nominate world chess legend Judith Polgar for the post of president of the country. According to the leader of the faction Andrea Buidosho, the final decision will be made by the legislators at the next meeting.

Earlier, the Prime Minister said that he intended to offer Polgar to take this post for a transitional period - until the country adopts a new constitution. In Hungary, the post of president is traditionally predominantly ceremonial.

Judith Polgar is a world-famous Hungarian chess player of Jewish origin. She received the title of grandmaster at the age of 15, breaking Bobby Fisher's long-term record. Polgar competed in men's tournaments on a fundamental equal footing and today is officially recognized as the greatest chess player in history.
