Scientists from the Israeli Institute of Technology (Technion) have made a breakthrough discovery that can forever change the approach to vaccination and treatment of diseases. Their study offers a fundamentally new method of drug delivery - through oral administration, without the need for painful injections.

The unique properties of breast milk became the basis for the revolutionary technology. A research group led by Professor Assaf Singer found that breast milk proteins form a special "crout" around nanoparticles, allowing them to overcome the intestinal barrier and enter the bloodstream. This discovery formed the basis for the development of artificial nanoparticles called "milcosomes".

"Our technology can make injections for vaccines against COVID-19, influenza and other diseases unnecessary," explains Professor Singer. "In addition, it opens up new opportunities for oral administration of drugs such as insulin, which today can only be administered by injections."

The idea of the study was born from the personal observation of the professor. After vaccinating his wife against COVID-19, he noticed that his newborn daughter, who was breastfed, showed the same reaction to the vaccine as her mother. This prompted the scientist to think about the possibility of transferring active ingredients through breast milk.

Studies have confirmed: breast milk does contain unique mechanisms for transporting complex molecules.

During experiments with cell cultures and tissue samples, scientists found out that:

- Breast milk proteins form a protective shell around nanoparticles;
- This shell ("corona") allows particles to penetrate through the intestinal barrier;
- Transportation efficiency depends on the charge of nanoparticles.

The technology has already received support from the European Research Council in the form of a grant. However, as scientists note, it can take from 10 to 15 years of intensive research and trials before clinical application.

"We do not strive for Nobel Prizes or millions of profits," Professor Singer emphasizes. "Our main goal is to save lives by making medical care more accessible and comfortable for patients of all ages."
