Pope Francis on December 4, during a meeting with Archbishop Jerome of Greece, which took place in Athens, asked forgiveness for the mistakes of the Catholics. This was reported by the Vatican News website.

Francis said that Catholics and Orthodox are united by roots that "are hidden underground and often forgotten, but they exist and everything rests on them."

“With shame I admit with regard to the Catholic Church that actions and decisions that have nothing to do with Jesus and the Gospel, dictated primarily by the desire for profit and power, have weakened the communion ... History has its weight, and today I feel the need to ask for forgiveness again from God and from the brothers for the mistakes committed by many Catholics, "the Pope said.

He called on Orthodox Christians and Catholics to help each other, serve others and fully respect freedom.
