The city of Sochi became the capital of the most important international meetings for several days. Tomorrow the Russia-ASEAN summit opens there, and the leaders of the countries of Southeast Asia are already arriving in the city.
Among the distinguished guests is Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is in Russia on an official visit. Today the head of one of the leading states of the region met with Vladimir Putin. The Presidents discussed current global issues and the development of bilateral relations, including partnerships in energy, agriculture and military-technical cooperation.
The Russian-Indonesian talks at the president's summer residence lasted about two hours. First, Vladimir Putin and Joko Widodo talked in an official setting, then in the format of a working lunch. As a result of the meeting, five documents were signed. The leaders issued a joint statement.
The fact that Joko Widodo was in Russia for the first time was clear without words. Airport, protocol meeting procedure: dear guest, as often happens, is served bread and salt. The Indonesian leader, having carefully listened to the interpreter, apparently did not understand everything about the Russian tradition. I broke off a piece, salted it, but did not eat it.
This visit continued to violate the protocol in some details. When the leaders, having already posed for photographers, took their seats, the chairs of the Indonesian delegation remained empty. The pause could be considered slightly prolonged, and Vladimir Putin decided to start. The lost negotiators were found just at that moment.
Joko Widodo arrived in Sochi as the first of all distinguished guests who are expected to attend the ASEAN summit. He arrived on an official visit at the invitation of the Russian President.
Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country. We have been cooperating with her for a long time in various areas. The total volume of trade, although it has somewhat decreased recently due to the impact of external factors, still amounts to a lot - two billion dollars. Our main export products are oil and also metals. But that's not all.
We are connected by major projects, such as, for example, the construction by Russian specialists in Indonesia of a railway to transport coal, which is mined in the province of East Kalimantan.
"Over two and a half thousand people will work on the project. The road will connect the part of the island rich in natural resources with a new port and an industrial and technological cluster, where manufacturing and processing enterprises will be deployed - also with the participation of Russian capital. It is planned to develop coal deposits, ferronickel, manganese dioxide, alumina, etc. There are groundwork for expanding energy cooperation,” Vladimir Putin noted, “Our companies Zarubezhneft and Rosneft have specific large-scale projects, including the construction of a modern oil refinery on the island of Java with possible investments in the amount of 13 billion dollars. Rosatom is working on a project for the construction of an experimental low-power reactor."
We have been supplying fighter jets, helicopters and infantry fighting vehicles to Indonesia for decades. And today a new agreement on cooperation in the field of defense was signed. Its details were not disclosed. As it became known, the defense departments of the two countries have been working on it for a long time.
The parties also agreed on cooperation in the field of archives and in the cultural sphere.
"The possibility of concluding an intergovernmental agreement on the mutual facilitation of visa procedures is being explored. Our countries will continue to interact on the platforms of the UN, the G20, APEC, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and, of course, within the framework of the Russian-ASEAN dialogue partnership," Vladimir Putin said.
Today in Sochi, Vladimir Putin also met with the president of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. This international financial organization started its work only last year. Its authorized capital is 100 billion dollars. China, India and Russia have the largest shares of votes on the board of directors. However, none of these countries has more control over the bank than others. All issues will be resolved together.
"Russia has joined the work of the bank created at the initiative of the People's Republic of China. In terms of capital in this bank, Russia ranks third after China and India. We believe that this is a timely, important and useful initiative, and we very much hope that under your leadership this the financial institution will take its rightful place in the structure of international financial institutions," V. Putin said.
“Russia is one of the largest shareholders of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Russia ranks third, and therefore, of course, we count on Russia's support in all the undertakings of our bank,” said Jin Liqun. “In fact, close cooperation between Russia and the ASEAN countries is in itself a support for the work of our bank.”
The President of Indonesia invited Vladimir Putin to pay a visit to his country. The President of Russia invited Joko Widodo to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum.
