Medical specialists of the Samara region should pay attention to the situation with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The corresponding instruction was given by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the governor of the region Dmitry Azarov during their meeting, the transcript of which was published on the Kremlin website.

During the conversation, the head of the Samara region admitted that the incidence rates in the region exceed the national average, despite the fact that "over the past ten years there has been a downward trend."

According to Azarov, the problem with HIV in the region persists. “First of all, this is Togliatti, where we are concentrating our efforts, we have planned, of course, additional events this year to cope with the problem,” he told the president.

The day before, Vadim Pokrovsky, an expert from Rospotrebnadzor, said that the first stage of the HIV infection epidemic was recorded in nine regions of Russia. He explained that in this case, only isolated cases of infection are detected. The highest stage is considered after overcoming the threshold of one percent of sick pregnant women. Pokrovsky stressed that there are more than twenty regions in Russia where the HIV epidemic has reached its highest, generalized stage.

In turn, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Health Committee Sergei Leonov, in an interview with Lenta.ru, said that the incidence of HIV in Russia would continue to grow. The parliamentarian attributed this to the fact that, thanks to new medications, the life expectancy of those infected has increased.
