Muslim woman appointed judge for first time in history of Israel

April 25, 2017

For the first time in the history of Israel, a woman was appointed a judge of a Sharia court. Hana Mansur-Khatib, a family lawyer from the city of Tamra, received the position of qadi (judge of the Sharia religious court) by decision of a special committee that oversees appointments to all Israeli courts.

All 9 members of the committee, including several members of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, voted for her candidacy.

A newly minted Muslim judge wearing a hijab has set a unique precedent for Israel. As you know, Jewish women are prohibited from holding judicial positions in religious courts, writes IslamNews with reference to Haaretz.

"This is a historic event," said Israeli Arab politician Issavi Fredge, who has been seeking the appointment of a Muslim woman as a judge for a long time.
