Moscow hosts roundtable "Russian Jews: Historical Heritage and Contemporary Development in a Multiethnic Society"

It was organized by the Jewish National-Cultural Autonomy of the City of Moscow with the assistance of the Public Organization Face to Face: Promoting Dialogue between Religions and Cultures (headed by Honorary President of the Jewish National-Cultural Autonomy of the City of Moscow V.D. Sternfeld).

The main goal of the event, held at the Moscow House of Nationalities, was to explore Russian-Jewish identity and the importance of preserving and researching the Russian-Jewish cultural code, reports Stmagi. The meeting focused on creating a foundation for future academic and research projects and developing an expert community in this field.

The discussion was attended by public and political figures, representatives of Jewish public and religious organizations, historians, philologists, specialists in interethnic relations, and media representatives.

Welcoming remarks were given by Sergei Sergeevich Anufrienko, Director of the State Budgetary Institution "Moscow House of Nationalities," and Jamil Rafikovich Sadykhbekov, Chairman of the Information Policy Commission of the Council for Nationalities Affairs under the Government of Moscow and member of the Public Council of the State Budgetary Institution "MDN."

The meeting was moderated by ethnic journalist and philologist Spartak Valerievich Yakushev, a public and political figure, Chairman of the Board of the Jewish National-Cultural Autonomy of Moscow, General Director of the Face to Face: Promoting Dialogue between Religions and Cultures, member of the Public Council of the Moscow House of Nationalities, and member of the Council for Nationalities Affairs under the Moscow Government. He noted that, as early as early 2025, the idea of singling out Russian Jews as a distinct sub-ethnic group had united a large number of activists, experts, and scholars.

Spartak Valerievich emphasized that understanding the historical path of Russian Jews and their contribution to the country's development is a crucial part of understanding Russian history as a whole.

Victoria Mikhailovna Engel, a public figure, executive director of the Face to Face public organization, and member of the Council of the Federal Jewish National-Cultural Autonomy, spoke about the unique traditions inherent to Russian Jews, noting the importance and value of the Russian-Jewish cultural code.

Evgeniya Abramovna Mikhaleva, Director of the ANO "Resource Center for National Relations" and a member of the Commission on the Preservation and Development of Cultural and Linguistic Diversity of the Peoples of Russia, under the Council on Interethnic Relations under the President of the Russian Federation, summarized the roundtable discussion. She emphasized the importance of continuing systematic work in this area and particularly noted the important role of Russian Jews in the development of Russian culture and the need for further study of their contribution.
