French politician and MEP Rafael Glucksman announced his intention to participate in the presidential elections in France in 2027.
He plans to be the only candidate from the moderate left and challenge the leader of the "Unconquered France" Jean-Luc Melanchon. Rafael's grandfather was a Soviet intelligence officer, The Telegraph reports.
46-year-old Glucksman announced his decision on August 23 on the air of TF1 TV channel.
"Yes, I am a candidate in the presidential election. Are we really going to give our country to the extreme right? In the face of such a choice, I could not stand aside," the politician said.
Glucksman heads the center-left party Place publique ("Public Place") and represents France in the European Parliament. In the elections to the European Parliament in 2024, he headed the joint list of his party and socialists, which received about 14% of the votes.
Before the presidential elections, he will take part in the primaries of social democratic forces organized by the Socialist Party and Place publique. They should pass in October.
At the same time, Glucksman's main competitor on the left flank remains Jean-Luc Melenchon, who is also going to the elections. According to recent polls, Melanchon is still ahead of Glucksman in terms of support and has a higher chance of reaching the second round.
Glucksman believes that moderate leftists will be able to fight for victory if they unite and do not focus on Melanchon.
"The leftists can win the presidential election if they firmly adhere to their principles. We must stop being afraid of Melanchon," he said.
The very next day after the announcement of Glucksman's candidacy, he was publicly supported by former green presidential candidate Yannick Jado. He said that he considers Glucksman a politician capable of uniting the issues of social justice, ecology, democracy and European integration.
Glucksman takes a consistent pro-European and pro-Ukrainian position and defends liberal democracy. At the same time, he criticizes part of the economic policy of the current President Emmanuel Macron.
Glucksman himself comes from a famous French family. His father is philosopher and publicist Andre Glucksman, one of the most prominent French intellectuals of the second half of the 20th century. The politician's grandfather Rubin Gluksman was a communist, cooperated with the Comintern and, according to historians, was engaged in intelligence activities in the interests of the USSR in France, Germany and Great Britain.
Additional attention to Glucksman's campaign attracts his personal life. His partner Lea Salame is one of the most famous French TV journalists and the host of the evening news France 2. French media reports that for the duration of the presidential campaign, she will refuse to conduct political programs to avoid a conflict of interest.
The first round of the presidential elections in France is scheduled for April 18, 2027, the second - for May 2. Emmanuel Macron will not be able to participate in them: The Constitution prohibits serving as president for more than two consecutive terms.
