“Design for yourselves cities which will be cities of refuge for you…” (Bamidbar, 35:11)
The roads leading to the cities of refuge were to be made wide and kept clear so that anyone who needed to use them could easily do so. In addition, there were to be signposts at all intersections clearly indicating the direction to the cities of refuge.
Similarly, the Almighty always keeps the path to the fulfillment of the Torah (our spiritual “city of refuge”) open and accessible to each of us. In addition, He also sends signals and signs to help us find the right direction in life.
However, in order to hear the voice of the Most High ourselves more clearly, we must help others find the right direction in their lives. You need to look at yourself as a signpost whose task is to show others the direction to a better life. And when God sees us showing the way to others, He shows us our way more clearly.
Ideally, we should try to be not just an inanimate “pointer”, helping only those who turn to us in search of the right path. You need to be a living pointing sign that goes to people and, when necessary, encourages them to look for the right path to what is most important in life.
