16.08.2024

Head of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Gamaleya Alexander Ginzburg said that the research work (R&D) on the creation of a monkeypox vaccine in Russia is almost complete. Clinical trials are coming, which will take about six months.

"The R&D is actually finished, and we are waiting for who will finance the "clinic", as it's a lot of money, we can't do it ourselves. Preclinical trials can still say how long they will take - 6-7 months," - quotes Professor RIA Novosti. Gunzburg also noted that people who have been in contact with monkeys with a patient with spox will be vaccinated, as well as persons with suspicion of possible infection, and of course, it will not be in the vaccination calendar.

A new epidemic of monkeypox began with an outbreak in the Congo, where they died, where more than 13.7 thousand cases and at least 450 deaths have been reported since the beginning of the year. Then the virus began to spread to Central and East Africa.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that in six months the number of cases exceeded the number of cases in the entire last year, and on the recommendation of the WHO Emergency Committee, declared the new epidemic a "an international public health emergency".

Monkeypox is a viral disease that is often manifested by fever, bubble rash and enlarged lymph nodes. WHO recalls that in the spring of 2022, this disease spread rapidly to Europe, the Americas, and then around the world. As a result, about 87,000 people around the world got sick with it, 112 of them died.
