Putin submits bill on military alliance with Communist North Korea

Oct. 14, 2024

Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma a bill on ratification of the treaty "on comprehensive strategic partnership" between Russia and the DPRK.

He and Kim Jong-un concluded it in June, during the first visit of the Russian President to North Korea in 24 years. The Treaty consists of 23 articles and replaces previous agreements, including the Treaty of Friendship, Good-neighborliness and Cooperation of 2000.

The treaty states that if one of the parties is attacked and is at war, the other will have to "immediately provide military and other assistance by all means at its disposal".

Shortly after the signing of the agreement, South Korean National Security Advisor Chan Ho Jin said that the authorities plan to reconsider the issue of arms supplies to Ukraine.

The British newspaper The Times, citing unnamed sources in the intelligence of one of the Western countries, wrote that the DPRK supplies Russia with half of all the shells that the Russian army uses in the war against Ukraine, which is one and a half million shells a year.
