Putin stopped Obama's anti-Israel initiative

Thanks to the intervention of Vladimir Putin in 2016, the UN Security Council did not pass an anti-Israel resolution prepared by the administration of Barack Obama. This is stated in the material published by the Israeli newspaper "Israel ha-Yom" (article below). According to the publication, in late 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to veto in the UN Security Council a US-promoted resolution aimed at forcing Israel to agree to the creation of a Palestinian state. As a result, the Obama administration refused to put the resolution to a vote in order to avoid a blow to the US foreign policy image.

The drama that unfolded between Israel, Russia and the USA about four years ago, behind the scenes of the UN Security Council, is now being revealed for the first time.

The details reveal a rare willingness of Russia to cast a veto on Israel's behalf, to block a resolution against Israel led by former American President Barack Obama in the UN Security Council. The resolution was supposed to force Israel to establish a Palestinian state based on the 1948 lines.

Prime Minister Netanyahu revealed about six months ago at an election conference in Ma'ale Adumim, that he did ask "a friend of his, a leader of one of the powers who has veto power in the Security Council with whom I have a very good relationship," to oppose the proposed resolution. That leader, according to Netanyahu, "stopped it".

In a closed meeting held in recent days, Netanyahu revealed more details on the matter.

Putin initially refused

Reminder: At the end of Obama's term, after Donald Trump had already been elected president but had not yet entered the White House, the US initiated Security Council Resolution 2334, which states that Israel is violating international law by its very presence in the territories occupied in '67. In Israel they knew in real time that the administration Coordinates the difficult decision with the Palestinians and European countries, but without American protection it could not have been stopped.

In his regret, Netanyahu turned to Putin for the first time in a phone call held on November 24, 2016, two weeks after Trump's election.

He explained to the Russian president that the decision arranged by Obama would destabilize the region and harm Israel, and asked Putin to announce that he intended to veto the Security Council to thwart the decision.

But Putin rejected the request. On December 23, 2016, the Security Council approved the difficult decision, and the US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, ultimately abstained.

Obama's insistence

But Obama was not satisfied with that. Even though he had less than a month left in the White House, he and his people began to organize another resolution against Israel in the Security Council, this time a more rigid one. This decision was supposed to determine by force on Israel the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1948 lines. The person who warned about this in real time was Israel's outgoing ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon.

Netanyahu again tried his luck with the Russian president. In another phone call, he explained to Putin that the next decision initiated by Obama would seriously harm Israel and could undermine regional stability.

This time, Russian President Putin was convinced and informed Netanyahu that if the resolution was put to a vote, Russia would overturn it.

According to what Netanyahu told the participants of the meeting, the Russian intention to torpedo the American move against Israel was known to Obama. The former American president, at the end of his term, realized that if Russia were the one to veto the defense of Israel in the Security Council, this would seriously damage the credibility of the US as an ally of Israel, and his own image in the Jewish community - and therefore decided to shelve the initiative.

Shortly before this drama, after Donald Trump had already been elected president but had not yet entered the White House, the United States initiated Security Council Resolution 2334, which determined that Israel's presence in the territories of '67 constituted a violation of international law. It should be noted that the Obama administration at the time denied Israel's claim that Another proposed resolution for 2334 will be brought to the Security Council.
