After "Wyborcza" revealed that the president of Sopot, Jacek Karnowski, was tapped using the Pegasus system, the politician issued a statement: "After winning the elections, the democratic opposition will do everything to bring these people before the State Tribunal."
Michał Kokot revealed in "Wyborcza" that Jacek Karnowski, the president of Sopot, was under the surveillance of the Pegasus spy program. "The CBA followed him before the last parliamentary elections, when he was preparing an opposition campaign for the Senate," he wrote.
Karnowski's number is on the list accessed by "Wyborcza" as a member of the international consortium Pegasus Project. The services logged on his phone at least a dozen times from November 2018 to March 2019.
After this publication, Jacek Karnowski, Mayor of Sopot, President of the Self-Government Movement "Yes! For Poland", he issued a statement.
Jacek Karnowski's statement on surveillance of the Pegasus system
“This is not the first time that PiS has been trying to destroy me as a political opponent using secret police methods – Mariusz Kamiński's CBA action, manipulation of recordings, articles in the PiS and Orlen press sponsored by state-owned companies. Now Pegasus!
As local government officials from the Local Government Movement, YES! For Poland, we will not allow the PiS machine to further destroy democracy, lead Poland to the East and sovietize our country. The politicians who inspired and commissioned these actions belong in prison. After winning the elections, the democratic opposition will do everything to bring these people before the State Tribunal. Nobody wants to live in Poland bugged. Our local communities must feel that this is their state of law, a state they can trust. PiS must go and answer for the destruction of Poland.
CBA vs. Karnowski
No proceedings are pending against Karnowski. The CBA conducted activities against him in 2008 (and a few years later), when businessman Sławomir Julke accused the president of Sopot of trying to bribe. The case lasted 10 years. The prosecutor's office withdrew from some of the charges, and Karnowski was cleared of the rest.
