The Peruvian authorities have asked Israel to extradite arms dealer Moshe Rothschild, suspected of bribing officials to promote a deal to supply the Peruvian army with 36 MiG-29 and Su-25 aircraft from Belarus for $402 million, La Republica newspaper reports.
According to Peruvian prosecutors, Rothschild was active under the rule of Alberto Fujimori, who was forced to flee to Japan in 2000 in light of allegations of corruption. Authorities suspect that Rothschild, a former Israeli Air Force pilot, bribed Peru's chief of intelligence during Fujimori's time, Vladimiro Montesinos, to advance the deal.
Peruvian Prime Minister Juan Jimenez, commenting on the request for extradition, said that he hopes for the principle of reciprocity, alluding to the extradition to Israel of judge Dan Cohen, who fled to Peru.
Recall that there is no extradition treaty between Israel and Peru. Despite this, after several years of negotiations, Lima agreed to extradite Cohen.
