Number of Christian Orthodox in Russia decreasing
Quote from Timothy Fitzpatrick on March 17, 2024, 21:21March 15, 2024Russia is approaching the beginning of Great Lent with a shrinking Orthodox community. Although Orthodox Christianity continues to be the most common religion in the country, the number of its supporters has decreased by 9% to 66% since 2017.
Interestingly, Russian women refer to themselves as Orthodox much more often than Russians - 72% against 58%. There are also many Orthodox among pensioners (75% in the 60+ group). These are the data of the survey of the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).
Of those who identify themselves as Orthodox, more than half (56%) do not observe fasts. 4% of Orthodox Christians strictly observe all posts.
