“People expressed a desire to see a monument to Joseph Stalin every day when they come to work,” said Vladimir Parshikov, deputy general director of the Russian Knight Foundation. The organization initiated the opening of the monument to Stalin in Velikiye Luki.
On the same day, August 15, local resident Andrei Ivanov went out on a one-man picket against the installation of a monument to the Secretary General. A man stood with a poster “If only they, plaster, were human, they would regain greatness” at the monument to Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky, who became a victim of Stalin’s terror.

This is the second monument to Stalin, which was erected in Russia in 2023. The first one appeared in Volgograd in January. In addition, local authorities, on the initiative of veterans, proposed renaming the city Stalingrad. Over 8.9 thousand people signed a petition against this initiative . According to the authors of the appeal, renaming Volgograd would be “a direct justification of Stalin’s crimes and an insult to the memory of the millions who died in the Great Patriotic War and the millions of victims of Stalin’s repressions.” At the same time, the city will still be renamed Stalingrad 10 times a year.
