Migrants in Russian colonies forced to fight in Ukraine under threat of repression

Oct. 14, 2024

Prisoners from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in Russia are forced to participate in the war against Ukraine.

The editorial office of "Present Time" (a division of "Radio Liberty") was contacted by a 32-year-old citizen of Tajikistan named Jovid, who is serving a seven-year sentence in a Russian colony.

According to him, the administration of the correctional colony forces him and other citizens of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to convert to Russian citizenship and sign a contract to be sent to the front. This is reported by "Ozodi" (another project of "Radio Liberty").

Jovid says that those who refuse to sign documents are sent to the detention center. In addition, prisoners are insulted by jailers who urge other prisoners to beat them. According to him, migrants from Central Asia were in a hopeless situation, and many people have thoughts of suicide.

From the colony where Jovid is held, a group of prisoners from Central Asia also wrote a collective letter to the Present Time. They claim that about 400 people from Central Asian countries are serving their sentences in their correctional colony. But it is unknown how many of them have already been sent to the war against Ukraine.
