In November, the SBU found Russian citizens with USSR military cards and pro-Russian literature in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Photo: ssu.gov.uaThe church is a serious body of influence on society, which is why the State Security Committee paid considerable attention to it even in Soviet times.
During the conversation about the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UPC MP), retired KGB officer of the USSR Volodymyr Popov told about this in an interview with the founder of the publication "GORDON" Dmytro Gordon.Popov called the singing of songs glorifying Russia in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra outrageous.
"The Ukrainian Church of the Moscow Patriarchate is what, a department of the FSB, or what?" - asked Gordon.
"It's not a department, " answered the ex-KGB officer. " It's first of all... Why was attention paid to the church and Stalin, so to speak, had an epiphany with the beginning of the Second World War, remembered the church? Do you remember? They flew around Moscow with the Kazan icon and everything else . This is primarily an organ of serious psychological influence on the masses. That is why the KGB paid serious attention to it. That is why Putin so sought the unification of the churches of the Moscow Patriarchate and the foreign church. Precisely in order to have the opportunity to influence the masses of people living in other countries - well, in particular, of course, in Ukraine. In fact, this is a branch of the FSB. Of course, this is not foreign intelligence - it is the FSB first and foremost."
Context:
The UOC MP is a part of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), it officially has the status of a "self-governing church with the rights of wide autonomy."
At the cathedral on May 27, the UOC MP declared its independence (amended the charter) and expressed disagreement with the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill, who supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but did not condemn him. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine believes that the charter change is "an attempt to hide the fact that the UOC remains under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate."On November 12, clergyman, teacher of the Kyiv Orthodox Theological Academy, Mykhailo Omelyan , published a video in which parishioners prayed for Russia on the territory of the Lavra and sang about the "ringing of Russia" and the "awakening of Mother Russia." The Security Service of Ukraine opened a criminal investigation into the incident .
After this incident, in November, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted a series of investigative measures in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (there they found citizens of the Russian Federation with military IDs of the USSR, "pro-Russian literature, which is used during education in seminaries and parish schools, in particular for propaganda of the "Russian world", and large sums of money in cash), in the dioceses of the UOC MP in the Rivne and Chernivtsi regions.
According to the results of a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, published on August 5, 72% of citizens in Ukraine consider themselves Orthodox . In addition, the majority refers to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, proclaimed in 2018.
