Sergey VarchenkoThe European Union ruled that the scandalous Russian-Israeli oligarch Roman Abramovich was not directly related to the annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of Ukraine.
The Jerusalem Post noted that the EU authorities have changed the wording of the justification of sanctions against Russian businessman Roman Abramovich. He tried to appeal the sanctions imposed against him, but at the end of 2023 the EU court confirmed their legitimacy.
The EU documents indicated that sanctions against Roman Abramovich were imposed due to the fact that he benefits from ties with "Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of Ukraine".
The second justification: Mr. Abramovich was involved in "economic sectors that provide a significant source of income to the government" of Russia.
The Jerusalem Post writes that the first wording was excluded. Amendments to the sanctions documents were made on January 27, 2025. This was done on the basis of the decision of the European Court of General Jurisdiction of December 2023. In that decision, the court rejected the argument of the EU Council about Mr. Abramovich's connection with Russian persons "responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of Ukraine".
