The dissident sedevacantist priests of the SSPX were immediately expelled and founded the Society of Saint Pius V. Rama Coomaraswamy was dismissed from his teaching position at St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary. Not only that, but although he was married and supposed to be attached to the Tradition of the Catholic Church, Rama Coomaraswamy would nevertheless be ordained a priest, in the schismatic and excommunicated episcopal line of Monsignor Thuc, as he himself would claim .

My conclusion after reading traditionalist literature a few years ago was similar to Mascarenhas's. Traditionalism posits that all religions are equal and that one tradition must be chosen and lived. Yet, from this position, living one tradition requires that all other traditions be considered false or at least inferior, meaning that there is an internal contradiction within traditionalist philosophy that prevents it from having the truth. Why the Lefebvrist seminary would adopt traditionalism, I can't really imagine, but Coomaraswamy, a Guénonian traditionalist, was instrumental in undermining the Catholic Mass in the Lefebvrist style.

Parents have a strong influence on their children's religious beliefs. This is why his father's involvement with Aleister Crowley is significant, and why his conversion to Catholicism is odd given his background. This complete rejection of the SSPX by the Vatican authorities did not, in the eyes of some of Archbishop Lefebvre's friends, justify his "obstinacy." In France as in Rome, the hypothesis of a psychological deficiency of the founder of Écone began to circulate. In December 1975, Dom Roy, who had known Archbishop Lefebvre for a long time, met him in Suresnes. This judgment on the psychology of Archbishop Lefebvre, then aged seventy, is not a medical diagnosis. It is an assessment made by a religious who knew him well – Archbishop Lefebvre had been attending Fontgombault Abbey since 1958 – and who had seen his character change in recent years. The biographer of the founder of Écône in no way repeats this harsh assessment. He devotes several pages to the character and psychology of the man he describes as a "gentle, stubborn man": "a strong man who does not even lack delicacy," even if there were "small flaws" in him. He speaks of the "two faces of Marcel Lefebvre": "There are encounters where the man of dialogue "stumbles" for good. Faced with strong minds, he is "a man of reaction." We are then exposed to somewhat sharp words from a man who stubbornly maintains his opinion, sometimes to the point of denying the obvious, in exasperation or embarrassment at having to explain himself: he then shows the flaw in his quality, or rather the excess of his tenacity."
