The pontiff stated this while speaking via video link at the All-Russian Meeting of Catholic Youth in St. Petersburg.
“Never forget the legacy. You are the heirs of great Russia: the great Russia of saints, rulers, the great Russia of Peter I, Catherine II, that empire - great, enlightened, [a country of] great culture and great humanity. Never give up this inheritance, you are the heirs of the great Mother Russia, go forward with it. And thank you. Thank you for your way of being, for your way of being Russians,” Francis said.
Currently, there are about a million baptized Catholics living in Russia, said the Chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Russia (CCER), Archbishop Pavel Pezzi in June of this year. There are several dozen Catholic churches in the country.
After the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, Pope Francis repeatedly called on the parties to negotiate and expressed his readiness to become a guarantor of peace in Ukraine. In October, the pontiff asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to “stop this spiral of violence and death, including for the sake of his own people,” and Zelensky to “be open to serious proposals for peace.”
At the beginning of May, Francis reported that he was participating in the peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, but did not provide details. In the same month, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky met with the Pope. The meeting took place in Rome. Zelensky noted then that Ukraine is “very interested” in involving the Vatican in the implementation of its peace initiative. Russia ruled out negotiations based on Zelensky’s “peace formula.”
