The unique sword, donated by SS head Heinrich Himmler to the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Mohammed Amin al-Husseini during his visit to Nazi Germany in March 1943, is being sold at an online auction with a starting price of 35,000 euros, which is the equivalent of 148,000 shekels.
The sword was offered for sale on the UK Saleroom website by the German auction house Hermann Historica, which specializes in the sale of historical items. The auction ends November 23rd.
The sword is 95 cm long and is made of Damascus steel. On one side of the blade is the inscription "To the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Muhammad Amin al-Husseini, with faithful friendship, from the Reichsführer", with two swastikas and the emblems of the SS - a pair of parallel vertical lightning bolts - engraved at the beginning and end of the sentence. The SS motto "My honor is my loyalty" is engraved on the other side of the blade. The handle of the sword is made of nickel and wood, and numerous Nazi symbols are carved on it.
In June, Israeli auction house Kedem put up for sale six rare, never-before-seen photographs of Husseini on his trip to Nazi Germany in the company of Adolf Hitler and Himmler. The photographs were sold for $12,300, equivalent to 45,000 shekels.
In 2015, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu provoked an international scandal by claiming that the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was the one who persuaded Hitler to carry out the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question" plan.
