On August 31, the Ministry of Health issued permission to conduct clinical trials of a vaccine against coronavirus infection in a nasal form to the Gamaleya Institute.
“They (tests. - Approx. ed. ) are carried out, yes. Now the staff told me that an independent committee must give permission to switch from one concentration to another,” said the professor, noting that the first phase will last 2-3 months.
Tatyana Grebennikova, head of the laboratory of molecular diagnostics at the Gamaleya Institute, said that according to the protocol, when testing a new drug, volunteers are first immunized with a minimum dose of the vaccine. Physicians then review the condition of the study participants and produce a report on the basis of which an independent data monitoring committee can give permission for a further increase in the dose of the drug in trial.
“I can say that according to the report, we did not have any adverse events,” the specialist emphasized. She also explained that it is impossible to say exactly how long the trials will take, since they need participants who do not have antibodies to the coronavirus, and most of the country's population has them.
According to the Stopcoronavirus portal , since the beginning of the pandemic, 19,629,682 cases of COVID-19 infection have been detected in Russia (50,952 over the past day). 18,672,586 people have recovered so far, 384,532 have died (91 people over the past day).
