The Basmanny Court of Moscow sentenced in absentia the publisher of Mediazona ( included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of media outlets performing the functions of a foreign agent ) Pyotr Verzilov ( also included in the Ministry of Justice in the register of foreign agents ) to 8.5 years in a general regime colony. RIA Novosti reports this .
Verzilov was found guilty of a crime under paragraph “e” of Part 2 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Public dissemination of knowingly false information about the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, motivated by political hatred”) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. He was also banned from administering Internet resources for four years.
Previously, the prosecutor requested nine years in prison for the defendant. The basis for initiating the case was Verzilov’s posts about the events in Bucha.
On January 9, the publisher was put on the international wanted list for concealing his Canadian citizenship, and on March 27, he was arrested in absentia in a case of fakes.
