The creeping rejuvenation of the CPRF is beginning to accelerate

The 24-year-old deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Altai Territory became the secretary of the Barnaul City Committee

As it became known to NG, the average age of the leadership of the regional and city branches of the CPRF has already decreased to about 50 years, that is, by about a third. This is because secretaries over 60 or 70 years old are most often replaced by ex-Comsomol members from 30 to 40 years old. However, there was an exceptional case in the Altai Territory: 77-year-old Anatoly Barsukov handed over the post of head of the Barnaul City Committee to Legislative Assembly deputy Alexander Volobuev, who is only 24. By the way, the Persian of the Altai Regional Committee, State Duma deputy Maria Prusakova is only 40 years old. Experts believe that the previously creeping rejuvenation of the party is now accelerating both for objective reasons and in the interests of its individual functionaries. For example, the first Deputy Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Yuri Afonin, who is considered one of the possible successors of Gennady Zyuganov, who will be 80 this year.

Even against the background of the rejuvenation that has been smoothly going on in the CPRF in the last decade years, the Barnaul story looks out of the ordinary. According to the results of the reporting and election conference of the City Committee held on May 26, the post of its first secretary was taken by the youngest deputy of the Legislative Assembly in the history of the Altai Territory. Volobuev is now 24 years old, and he replaced a 77-year-old veteran, who was restoring communist cells in this region in the early 90s, and has been driving the city committee since 2018. At the same time, Barsukov did not leave the party, moving to a leadership position in the district committee that he once originally headed. That is, in Barnaul, the transit of power among the left was conflict-free at least at first glance.

At the same time, Volobuyev joined the Komsomol only in 2017, became a member of the party in 2020, and in 2021 he was elected a deputy of the Altai Legislative Assembly and in the same year headed the regional Komsomol members. In the CPRF, this and other personnel castling was explained by the fact that "as the largest party branch of the CPRF in the Altai Territory, the Barnaul organization is largely an engine and model, and therefore, the tasks for this branch are of increased responsibility." However, following the results of the reporting and election campaign in Barnaul, the leadership of four out of five district committees was updated and again rejuvenated. The central one was headed by Maria Korchagina (36 years old) - assistant to the State Duma deputy Prusakova. In the Zheleznodorozhny district, Yegor Polomoshnov (22 years old) was elected first secretary. He is a famous blogger and journalist in the city. And, for example, in the Industrial District, the Communists entrusted the post of head to the municipal deputy and public figure Sergei Pilyugin (36 years old).

In fact, the creeping rejuvenation of the CPRF is far from the latest news. For example, four years ago in St. Petersburg, 65-year-old Olga Khodunova was replaced by 38-year-old Roman Kononenko. Since 2014, the Sverdlovsk branch has been headed by 26-year-old Alexander Ivachev, who is considered the protégé of the same Afonin (47 years old).

The question is, why did the truly radical changes happen in the Altai Territory? Of course, this year there will be more than 60 municipal election campaigns, but it's hardly the whole point. It is most likely that this region remained one of the few truly red, so it should be kept in this form until the Duma elections of 2026. Prusakova is doing this, but she obviously needed more control over the party members, which the change of generations, of course, contributes. However, this is hardly the only answer to the question of the reasons for the acceleration of rejuvenation processes.

In principle, the head of the legal service of the Communist Party of the United Feomaryed "NG" Georgy Kamnev, "in fact, all these conversations about the party of pensioners are idle speculations." He himself headed the Penza Regional Committee at the age of 27 in 2011. However, he admitted, in Barnaul, the appointment of Volobuev to the hill was made as if in advance. At the same time, according to Kamnev's feelings, the most working age for a party member, in which more than half of the leaders of regional committees and city committees are staying, is about 50 years. About a third are young people under the age of 40, older party members are about 20%.

First Secretary of the Komsomol Vladimir Isakov explained to "NG" that after all, 20-year-old leaders are a rarity for the CPRF, even 30-year-olds at the city and regional levels are not so many. But at the level of district committees and primary leaders of student age, there are a lot of leaders. And he confirmed that the golden age of the party member in a serious post is about 40 years, there are about a third of them in the CPRF. Isakov gave such an example: in December 2023, Viktor Tsarikhin, a 36-year-old deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Leningrad region, became the secretary of the Central Committee for organizational work with the regions. Note that this sphere is supervised by Afonin. Tsarikhin himself reminded "NG" that the average age of the Communist Party of the Communist Party according to the data for 2024 is 53.5 years. In other words, young people and middle-aged people together make up about 80%.

The head of the Political Expert Group Konstantin Kalachev explained to "NG": "Most likely, the CPRF has a global goal - electoral support for young people and their involvement in its ranks. Firstly, back in the 90s it was obvious that the party was aging, and secondly, since the early 2000s it is obvious that the current pensioners often vote for the party of power. That's why the party needs to demonstrate that it has serious opportunities for young people. And, they say, there is no need to join radical left-wing organizations or go to informals when there is a legal party with specific career elevators. And the Altai Territory is probably such an experimental testing ground. But Kalachev and municipal elections consider it a significant factor, because it is there that young candidates most often appear.

General Director of the Center for Political Information Alexey Mukhin noted "NG" that it seems that behind the acceleration of the rejuvenation of the party there are specific interests within the CPRF, for example, the same Afonin. It is logical to assume that in this way he is trying to strengthen his own position: "The older generation often has ageism towards young people. And in general, the CPRF hopes for force majeure circumstances that will send the protest electorate to vote for it. At the same time, the CPRF has no goal to rejuvenate the leadership of the Central Committee. After the presidential campaign, this became obvious," the expert stressed. According to Mukhin, it was Afonin who realized after the March elections that the "old horse" still "spoils the furrow" and that under the same possible force majeure circumstances in the leadership of the party, he is unlikely to be elected to this place. Therefore, his only chance to lead the party in the future is to contribute to its rejuvenation. "Afonin is working with his "young guard" within the CPRF to have a tactical advantage in the future. And it was yesterday's Komsomol members who blew up the CPSU from the inside in perestroika," Mukhin stressed.
