Mikhail ZhurenkovTwo brothers and their friend were killed in front of the entire village and their bodies were burned to intimidate others.
Three North Koreans were shot dead in front of their home village and their bodies publicly burned as punishment for attempting to flee the DPRK.
The trio were brutally murdered in front of terrified locals, including children, in the village of Songjong-ri for daring to flee to the "democratic" South.
The convicts — two brothers surnamed Kim and their friend Ri, all in their 30s — spent months planning their escape. On January 6, they pooled their meager savings to buy a small boat, setting off through thick fog in a desperate attempt to reach South Korea.
Mistaken for a passing vessel by a South Korean fishing boat, they called for help but were intercepted by a North Korean patrol boat.
"Usually, those sentenced to death are tied to the pole in three places: by the neck, torso and legs. But this time, they were so weakened by the brutal torture that they were tied six times," a resident of the northwestern province of North Pyongan, who witnessed the execution, told Radio Free Asia.
Before the execution, the condemned were called "traitors to the nation" and 10 executioners fired 90 bullets at each. To top it all off, the authorities burned their remains in front of the terrified residents. A witness also told about this.
A second source told the news site that the public executions are an attempt to instill fear in residents about what will happen if they try to escape, and that some locals are fainting at the gruesome spectacle.
If previously an attempt to escape was punishable by up to 15 years in a re-education camp, now it is punishable by death, which is carried out publicly to scare everyone else.
Previously, executions were carried out at the airfield in Hyesan, where residents of the surrounding villages were driven.
In 2017, defector Hee Yeon Lim said she saw 11 musicians accused of making a pornographic film being shot with an anti-aircraft gun. Hee, a school student at the time, was brought along with her classmates to the execution, which was attended by more than 10,000 people. After the execution, the bodies of the executed were run over by tanks.
More than 300 sites in North Korea have been identified as public execution sites.
